Hawaii Car Rental Customer Facility Charge Increase

A $3.50 increase in the daily customer facility charge takes effect on September 1, 2010.

The $4.50 customer facility charge for car rentals at Hawaiian airports will generate an estimated $50 million dollars per year towards the $497 million planned construction of centralized facilities for all auto rental companies at 4 Hawaiian airports.

The increase to $4.50 from $1 a day will last 20 years or more and was pushed by rental car agencies and state airport officials. "The goal is, if they improve their operational efficiency, then they can save on costs because now they have some shared areas," said state Transportation Director Brennan Morioka. "The intent obviously is for them to pass the savings on to their customers in terms of lower rates."

Current plans are for a planned four-level, $229 million facility at Honolulu Airport and $190.5 million project planned for Kahului Airport. Smaller facilities are also in planning for Lihue and Hilo.

This will centralize and move all rental car operations and shuttle services indoors at these airports.

The only way to avoid the increased fee is to rent from an off-airport location.
