LAHAINA - A HISTORIC WHALING VILLAGE

Lahaina, once known as Lele, or “restless sun”, is a town steeped in history. Once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the early nineteenth century, Lahaina was known as a whaling village during the whaling boom in the mid 1800’s, with up to 1500 sailors and 400 or more ships working the whaling trade at that time, including Herman Melville, who wrote about the era in his classic novel Moby Dick.

Nestled between the coast and West Maui Mountains, Lahaina is the gateway to Kapalua and the Kaanapali beach resorts, Lahaina is a 45 minute drive from the Kahului Airport.

Today, Lahaina is a popular spot on Maui, with dozens of art galleries, unique shipping experiences and well-known restaurants. The sunny climate and oceanfront setting provides the perfect backdrop for activities and entertainment that can be easily accessed in your Lahania rental car.

Cool down under one of the largest banyan trees in the United States – imported from India in 1873, this sprawling tree was planted in front of the Lahaina courthouse, and now stands more than 60 feet high, and spread out across an entire city block.

A trip to Maui usually involves at least one day trip into Lahaina to explore the culture and sights, and often more than one day will be needed to add some adventure, possibly take in a whale watching tour from the harbour during the winter months, or plan for a Luau, or a walking tour. The channel off the coast of Lahaina is one of the pest places in the world to spot humpback whales.

CHOOSING A CAR RENTAL IN LAHAINA, MAUI

Most visitors to Maui will pick up their vehicle at the airport in Kahului and use it for the entire time they are visiting the Island of Maui. This is by far the most popular option, as you will be guaranteed transportation right front the moment you arrive, and you will save both time and money having your own vehicle for exploring Lahaina and the rest of Maui.

Car rentals can be picked up at various Lahaina car rental locations for those that fly into Kapalua Airport on the West Side, or arrive by Cruise Ship to the Lahaina Harbor and need a one day rental to tour around Maui. Maui is very spread out, and a car rental in Lahaina is required to visit the many areas around the West Side of Maui.

Although there are taxis, and some rideshare options, these can become cost prohibitive very quickly.

Lahaina car rental facilities are located closer to the Kapalua Airport, in the Kaanapali area, to service travelers arriving at the Kapalua (JHM) Airport. Some of these Lahaina car rental companies have shuttles that can pick you up from your accommodations and take you to the Lahaina car rental locations.
