Dollar Rent A Car was founded in Los Angeles, in 1965, where its executive offices remained until 1994. August 1990 saw the acquisition of Dollar Car Rental by Chrysler and became part of its Pentastar Transportation Group. In August 1994, Dollar relocated its world car rental headquarters to Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 2012, Hertz Global Holdings, Inc., acquired Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc.

Dollar Car Rental has approximately 570 locations in 61 countries, including approximately 260 within the United States and Canada. Dollar has locations on all of the Hawaiian Islands, complete with a small office in Honolulu that manages all of the Dollar Car Rental Airport and Hawaiian locations.

We have a very good relationship with the staff at Dollar Car Rental in Hawaii. Our staff work closely with our counterparts at Dollar to help make sure every customer is satisfied with their rental car.

Dollar has been very generous in offering our company discounts on young driver fees at $10/day plus tax instead of their regular charge of $29/day plus tax. Dollar is one of the few companies that rent to drivers as young as 20 years of age in Hawaii. With Dollar you are also able to add two free additional drivers at the counter, saving even more money, and giving you the freedom to have extra drivers share the driving on your trip.

Does Dollar Rent a Car take debit cards?

Dollar allows a debit card at all of their corporate Dollar Car Rental locations. Debit cards issued under a VISA, MasterCard or Discover logo, which draw funds directly for a cardholder’s linked bank account may be used at the beginning of a rental if the reservation for the rental was made 24 hours prior to vehicle pick up. If the reservation is not made 24 hours prior to the pick up time, or if you are renting a luxury, premium or convertible car class, you must show a valid driver’s license and one other form of identification and proof of a return travel ticket from an Airline or Cruise.

What kind of cars does Dollar Rent a Car have?

Dollar has virtually every class of car available at their Hawaii locations, including 4 door Jeep Wranglers, Large Vans, and various sizes of SUVs.

Does Dollar Rent a Car charge for under 25 drivers?

We have an arrangement with Dollar - all drivers 20-24 that book using our rates that show the $10/day young driver rate, will only be charged $10/day plus tax per young driver.

Does Dollar Car Rental have a military discount?

With our discounted rates, there are no further discounts available.

Is Dollar Car Rental reliable?

Dollar is very reliable. Be prepared when you arrive at the counter, knowing whether you already have insurance, etc., and you will find Dollar very co-operative. The Dollar counter staff may offer you added options such as gas packages, and GPS devices, their insurance packages, and it is up to you to decide if these items are necessary. You are the one that decides what you wish to add at the counter.

How much is Dollar Car Rental insurance?

There are different policies available at the counter for different coverage items. Each has its own individual rate. Coverage can be costly, depending on your own needs. Coverage can be over $35 per day when purchased at the counter

Does Dollar Rent a Car charge for additional drivers?

Yes, Dollar normally charges at least $12/day for additional drivers. With our benefit package with Dollar, you can add up to 2 free additional drivers, saving you upwards of $24/day.

Additional Dollar Information & Requirements

Driver must be 20 years of age and have a valid driver’s license and have a major credit/debit card** in their name. Young Drivers (20-24) are subject to a Young Driver Fee. A hold will be placed on all credit card/debit cards for the amount of the rental plus 15% or a minimum amount.

Base rates do not include optional insurance, taxes, the Vehicle Licensing fee, the applicable Airport Concession Recovery Fee and the Hawaii Highway Revenue surcharge. Renters will be responsible for all charges directly to the rental location.
Daily rentals are based on a 24 hour period. Weekly rates are based on 5 to 7 consecutive days rental on one island only.

24 hour advance booking recommended. No other coupons or discounts apply. All rentals are subject to the standard terms and conditions in effect on the rental date. All prices USD and subject to HI taxes. All rates, taxes, options, and additional charges are subject to change without notice.

Dollar Car Rental Debit Card Requirements: Debit cards must have either the Visa or MasterCard logo. Debit cards may only be used in conjunction with proof of round trip ticket (airline or cruise) at the time of rental as well as a second piece of valid ID, for example:

  • 1-Passport
  • 2-US Military ID
  • 3-Non-Gov. ID w/photo (eg. Costco card)
  • 4-Additional credit or debit card
  • 5-Current utility statement (same name address as license)

Without proof of a round trip ticket, debit cards are only accepted on return. Customers using debit cards to qualify to rent at the beginning of the rental will be subject to a debit card screening, which may impact the customer’s credit evaluation. If the screening fails to meet our debit card criteria, the customer will be required to present a major credit card in order to qualify to rent. A hold will be placed on all credit/debit cards for the estimated amount of the rental. Dollar will remove the hold at the end of the rental when the final charges are settled.

Dollar Rental Car EARLY / LATE RETURN FEES

If return time varies by more than 24 hours from date and time on Rental Agreement, Early/Late Return fees may apply:

  • Early Return (24+ hours early) – $25.00 (one-time fee), in addition to rental charges.
  • Late Return (24+ hours late) – $15.99/day for a maximum of five (5) rental days ($79.95), in addition to rental charges.
  • Frequent Flyer Plans: If you are a member of a participating frequent flyer program, you can earn miles with your Dollar car rental. Simply give your frequent flyer number to the agent at the car rental counter, when picking up your car. Dollar charges a handling fee to process frequent flyer claims.

  • LDW $33.99/day
    DOLLAR will waive a renter’s responsibility for any loss or damage to a Dollar vehicle, unless the renter has not complied with the Rental Agreement. LDW is not insurance.
  • SLI $14.24/day
    Provides the renter or any additional authorized driver as listed in the Rental Agreement, with automobile liability coverage against third party claims for bodily injury, including death, and property damage resulting from an automobile accident in the DOLLAR vehicle, during the rental period, in excess of the coverages provided under the Rental Agreement up to a maximum protection of $1,000,000 combined single limit per occurrence. SLI does not provide coverage for uninsured and underinsured motorist protection.
  • PPP $6.99/day
    Personal Protection Plan (PPP) provides renters with medical and death benefits in and out of the vehicle. Provides passengers with medical benefits for current incidents and provides some benefits for selected items that were stolen from rental vehicle.
  • UMP $6.95/day
    Uninsured Motorist Protection (UMP) provides the renter, any authorized additional driver and anyone else occupying a DOLLAR vehicle while operated by the renter or an additional authorized driver, with coverage for injuries and damages caused by an owner or driver of an uninsured or underinsured third party vehicle. This coverage is excess over any uninsured motorist insurance available to the renter and provides up to $1,000,000 combined single limit per occurrence.
