Avis Rent a Car was founded in 1946 at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan, by Warren Avis. By 1953 Avis became the second largest car rental company in the United States, and the first car rental operation located at an airport. By 1962, the Avis corporate motto of “We Try Harder” was adopted. This motto was used for 50 years, before a 2012 rebranding took place, with a new motto of “It’s Your Space”.
Avis introduced Wizard, the first computer-based information and reservation system used in the United States for car rental businesses.
In 1989, General Motors acquired a 29% stake in the company, and by 2006 Avis was known as the Avis Budget Group.

Can you drop off a rental car after hours at Avis?
Some Avis locations may have an after hours drop procedure - it is always best to ask at the counter if you believe you may need to drop after hours.
Do Avis rental cars have GPS?
GPS units are available at the counter in limited supply to rent through Avis. If you have your own GPS device, you may wish to bring it with you.

Is a deposit required?
When you rent a vehicle, a hold will be placed on your credit or debit card for the amount of the rental, and a security deposit that could cover items like a late return fee, or additional fuel charges if the car does not get returned full. Does Avis have unlimited mileage?
In Hawaii, unlimited mileage is very common and applies to most vehicles. There may be some especially vehicles that have limited mileage, however, each Island in Hawaii is small enough that it would be very unusual to go over any mileage limits.
Can my spouse drive my Avis rental car?
Yes, spouse always drives free - and a domestic partner is also able to drive free.

- Valid Driver’s License
- Minimum age 25 years with a major credit card for discount rates
- Drivers aged 21 – 24 are subject to a $27/day young driver surcharge
- Minimum age 25 years when presenting a Debit card. Debit cards must have either the MasterCard or Visa logo.
- A minimum hold of $400 will be applied to debit card rentals

Additional Avis Car Rental Information & Requirements
BEWARE – Adding an Avis Preferred membership number to this reservation will void the discount rate and the retail rate will apply. You lose the discount and we lose our commission unless done at time of booking on our website.
Base rates do not include optional insurance, taxes, the Vehicle Licensing fee, the applicable Airport Concession Recovery Fee and the Hawaii Highway Revenue surcharge. Renters will be responsible for all charges directly to the rental location.
Weekly rates can be based on 5 – 7 consecutive days rental on one island only.
Late Return Charges: Rates are based on a 24 hour rental period. There is a 29 minute grace period after which late returns are assessed an hourly charge at a rate equal to 3/4 the daily rate up to but not exceeding the daily rate. After 7 hours an additional $10 per day penalty applies for each additional day.
24 hour advance booking recommended. No other coupons or discounts apply. All rentals are subject to standard terms and conditions in effect on the rental date. All prices USD and subject to HI taxes. All rates, taxes, options, and additional charges are subject to change without notice.
