Hawaii Cruise Line Car Rentals for Visitors Arriving on Cruise Ships

Arriving in Hawaii by cruise ship? Renting a car gives you flexibility, letting you explore beaches, volcanoes, scenic drives, and hidden gems at your own pace. But the process isn’t always as simple as stepping off the ship — knowing which car rental companies offer shuttles from the pier, which ones don’t, where the rental offices are, and how to plan can save you time and stress.

Renting a car while on a cruise ship in Hawaii can be a great way to explore the stunning beauty of the islands at your own pace. Each island has its unique charm and natural beauty, and a rental car can give you the freedom to see the sights you’re interested in without being confined to a set schedule or route, or relying on a guided tour that might not get you everywhere you want to go.

Once you have rented a car, you can set out to explore the island. In Hawaii, there are numerous scenic drives that will take you through breathtaking landscapes of lush forests, towering mountains, and sparkling coastlines. For example, on the island of Oahu, you can take a drive around the North Shore to see the famous surf breaks and beaches or drive to the top of the Ko’olau Mountain Range for panoramic views of the island.

This guide walks you through what to expect, where shuttles are available, and how to pick the best rental arrangements for your time in Hawaii.

Ports in Hawaii & Key Rental Locations

Here are the major cruise ship ports in Hawaii, and what car rental / airport / pier layout looks like in each:

Island / Port Pier / Harbor Nearest Airport Rental Location (if not at pier)
Big Island – Hilo Harbor Hilo Harbor (pier) Hilo Airport (ITO) — many rental companies are based at the airport.
Big Island – Kona Harbor King Kamehameha (Kona) Pier Some rental agencies have local offices downtown/Kona which is faster and easier. “We have a supplier that is only a few miles away with shuttle service to the pier. There are more locations at the airport, 20 mins away” – Kona Airport (KOA) for many companies but is not very close, so it is more costly to get to and from.
Kauai – Nawiliwili Harbor Nawiliwili Pier Lihue Airport (LIH) is the main rental / agency base. Some firms attempt shuttle service to the pier.
Maui – Kahului Harbor Kahului Pier Kahului Airport (OGG) is nearby; rentals are usually airport-based or near the airport.
Maui – Lahaina Harbor Lahaina Pier (currently closed at some times) Lahaina local rental offices; arrival from the pier may require walking or non‐shuttle transport.
Oahu – Honolulu Harbor Pier in Honolulu Most major rental agencies are airport locations. Honolulu Airport (HNL) is key. Rentals from pier often require travel to the airport location.

Which Companies Do / Do Not Provide Shuttle or Pier Pickup

Here’s a breakdown of specific car rental companies / suppliers and whether they offer shuttle service for cruise ship passengers, by port. Always double‐check current status, since policies change.

Rental Company / Supplier Ports / Harbors Served With Shuttle or Pier Pickup Ports / Harbors Where Shuttle / Pier Pickup Is Not Available
Payless Free shuttle to/from Hilo Pier for cruise customers. Nawiliwili (Kauai): shuttle when cruise ship in port.

Other ports might not offer shuttle.
Budget Hilo: yes, free shuttle for certain hours. Nawiliwili (Kauai): shuttle when cruise ship in port Many other Hawaiian ports: often no shuttle, must go to the airport or rental office. e.g. at Maui, Kauai etc.
Avis Hilo: provides shuttle service.
Nawiliwili (Kauai): shuttle when cruise ship in port.
Maui ports like Kahului: in many cases no shuttle from the pier; must make transport arrangements.
Thrifty/Dollar Thrifty/Dollar does not offer shuttle service. Must get to and from port by taxi / Uber etc.
Enterprise Kona: does send shuttle from pier; customers call once off ship. Many Maui / Kauai / Oahu ports — often no shuttle; must get from port by taxi / Uber etc.
Alamo Alamo does not offer shuttle service. Must get from port by taxi / Uber etc.

How Discount Hawaii Car Rental Handles Cruise Passenger Rentals

Here are some unique points / policies you should know:

  • When booking, make sure to select the “CRUISE PASSENGERS” option under island/location. That helps you see which suppliers offer shuttle service (if any) for that specific port. You can click on a car type that you would prefer and look at the details – you can see if the supplier offers cruise ship pick ups. (Most do not).
  • The confirmation email will include cruise ship shuttle information if your supplier provides it.
  • Some suppliers do provide free shuttle service to/from various piers. But most do not. Hence often you may need to take an Uber, taxi, or comparable service from the pier. Even if there is a shuttle, it is sometimes much faster to just call an UBER or TAXI to beat the crowd to the counter. This way, you can choose any company, and go with the best price, not the best shuttle service.

How to Plan Ahead

Although we have several suppliers that offer free shuttle service to and from the various piers there may be a benefit if you are willing to take a taxi. Firstly, a lower rate may be available from a supplier that does not provide shuttle service at all. Additionally, you will probably end up claiming the vehicle faster and get more time exploring the island than if you waited for the shuttle bus service.

To make your cruise + car rental go more smoothly, consider the following tips:

  • Confirm Shuttle Availability Ahead of Time. Before you leave the ship, call or check with your rental company (or with Discount Hawaii preferrably) to confirm whether the shuttle from the pier is running that day & at what times. Policies sometimes change without much notice.
  • Know the Shuttle / Pickup Schedule. Shuttles often run only during certain hours. For example, at Hilo the shuttle runs during morning arrival from the pier and has scheduled return shuttles.
  • Allow Enough Time. Disembarkation, meeting the shuttle, then getting to the rental office takes time. If you plan to drive somewhere far or have limited shore time, budget carefully.
  • Have a Backup Transport Plan. In ports where shuttles are not available, taxi / ride‑share (Uber/Lyft) are common. Know approximate cost.
  • Check rental location hours. Some downtown or local offices have limited hours or are closed on certain days. If you arrive off schedule, make sure you can get service. This is very important if you are renting from a local supplier (Enterprise) in downtown Kona, or Kahului off airport, as they have shorter hours and may have days when they are closed.
  • Reserve in advance. Cruise ship days can see high demand at ports. Booking early often gives better choice and rate, especially for car rentals at Hilo/Kona/Kahului/Nawiliwili/ Honolulu ports.

How to Enjoy your car rental experience while cruising in Hawaii

In addition to scenic drives, renting a car also allows you to visit attractions that may be difficult to access without your vehicle. For example, on the island of Maui, you can drive the winding road to Hana, which takes you through numerous waterfalls and scenic lookouts. Similarly, on the island of Kauai, you can drive to the end of the road at Ke’e Beach and hike the Kalalau Trail for stunning views of the Na Pali Coast. Make sure you research these options ahead of time to make sure they are open, and accepting visitors. Some places require reservations. Also, make sure you have enough time on shore to get to and from your destination.

It’s important to note that driving in Hawaii may be different from what you are used to, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with the local driving laws and customs. For example, in Hawaii, drivers must stop for pedestrians at crosswalks, and speed limits can vary depending on the area. It’s also important to be aware of the weather and road conditions, especially if you plan on driving on mountainous or rural roads.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Sometimes yes (at certain ports and times), but frequently no. Many have discontinued or reduced shuttle service, especially in Maui, Kauai, and Honolulu harbors. Always verify for your specific port and date.

Usually via taxi, ride‑share (Uber/Lyft), or a short walk (if close).

No companies have offices on or immediately adjacent to the pier. Many are at airports or off‑site. So most of the time no.

Try to build in buffer time. If shuttle service ends early, you might be stuck. Also check with the rental company whether they have a grace period or policies for late arrivals.

No — booking with us helps identify which suppliers do offer shuttle for your cruise port via the “Cruise Passengers” option. But whether the shuttle runs depends on supplier & port & schedule. So confirm in advance.
