Just a stone’s throw (or a very short drive) from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist strip, this 100-acre park is where the locals go to play. Whether you’re looking to swim laps in glassy water, host a family picnic, or catch a sunset that will make your Instagram followers green with envy, “Ala Moana” (which means Path to the Sea) is the place to be.
The Parking Lowdown (Yes, It’s Free!)
I know, I know—finding free parking in Honolulu feels like finding a needle in a haystack. But that’s the magic of Ala Moana!
The Main Lot:
There are roughly 1,000 parking stalls spread throughout the park. The best part? Parking is FREE.
Where to Look:
You’ll find stalls along the main park drive and a large lot near Magic Island (the man-made peninsula at the east end).
Best Strategy:
On weekdays, you can usually snag a spot easily. On weekends, however, it’s a different story! Locals flock here for birthday parties and BBQs. If you’re visiting on a Saturday or Sunday, aim to arrive before 9:00 AM.
The "Mall" Option:
If the park is totally packed, you can technically park across the street at the Ala Moana Center (the world’s largest open-air mall!) and walk over. Just be sure to do a little shopping or grab a bite there to stay in their good graces!
Why You’ll Love It More Than Waikiki
Don’t get me wrong, I love the energy of Waikiki. But Ala Moana offers a few perks that are hard to beat:
Calm, Protected Waters:
Thanks to an outer reef, the water here is almost always pancake-flat. It’s perfect for "keiki" (kids) to splash around safely or for beginner
Stand-Up Paddleboarders (SUP) to find their balance without a wave knocking them over.
Magic Island:
This peninsula is a masterpiece. It features a shallow, walled-in lagoon that is essentially a giant saltwater swimming pool. With over half a mile of golden sand and massive grassy lawns shaded by ancient Banyan trees, you won’t be elbow-to-elbow with other sunbathers.

Insider Tips for Tourists
The "Lau Hala" Picnic:
Before you head to the beach, stop by Foodland Farms in the Ala Moana Center. Grab a container of their famous fresh poke and some Hawaiian Sun juice. It’s the ultimate local lunch for under $20.
Exercise Like a Local:
You’ll see tons of residents jogging the 2.6-mile perimeter path. It’s a great way to get your heart rate up with a view of the Pacific on one side and the Honolulu skyline on the other.
Safety First:
The park has lifeguards, showers, and restrooms, which makes it a very "easy" beach day for families. Just remember that the park officially closes at 10:00 PM, and they do enforce it!
Watch Your Feet:
While the east end near Magic Island has a nice sandy bottom, some parts of the middle beach can be a bit rocky/coral-heavy. If you have sensitive feet, toss a pair of reef shoes in your rental car trunk just in case.

Foodland Farms (Ala Moana Center):
Just across the street, this is the gold standard for fresh, affordable poke bowls and local snacks. It’s perfect for grabbing a quick, high-quality meal to eat back at your hotel or for a second picnic.
Marugame Udon (Ala Moana Center):
Located in the mall's street-level Hookipa Terrace, this spot offers fast, delicious, and incredibly affordable handmade udon noodles. A warm bowl of broth is surprisingly refreshing after a long day in the ocean.
Side Street Inn (on Hopaka St):
A legendary local favorite just a few minutes away. Known for massive "family-style" portions of pan-fried pork chops and fried rice, it’s the ultimate place to refuel with friends after a group beach day.
Arvo (Kaka’ako):
A trendy, Aussie-style cafe in nearby SALT at Our Kaka’ako. Their loaded toasts and iced lattes are ideal for a lighter, "Instagram-worthy" post-beach brunch or afternoon pick-me-up.
Getting There in Your Rental
If you’re coming from Waikiki, just head west on Ala Moana Boulevard. You can’t miss it—it’s the giant green oasis right across from the mall. Having your own car makes it so much easier to haul your cooler, towels, and snorkel gear without having to worry about a cramped bus or a pricey rideshare.
